Remembering Charlemagne

Today is the 1200th anniversary of the death of Charlemagne, the celebrated Frankish emperor who stamped his authority over most of Europe. Cleverly, when he was short of manpower, he would sometimes use armies made of rocks, trees and birds:

 
Sadly, Charlemagne is not recorded as ever having said anything even vaguely like this. (See a well-informed discussion here).
